From Laredo Tx. to Cancun is a 28 hour trip if you go via Mexico City and use mayor toll highways. It's safe as long as you use common sense. Drive thru Mexico City on a sunday to avoid caothic heavy traffic.

Yes you can but it is a loooong drive...about 40 hrs driving time.  If you are a calm, confident patient person...ok.  Type A, nerous, hurry-up personalities will never make it.  It is challenging and will cost more than a plane ticket...and then you have to drive back.  At some point, the unexpected WILL happen.  I drove from Colorado to Veracruz ( where I now live) and know people who have driven from Tx to Cancun.  You can use the mapsite below for a suggested route...and you will need a Guia Roji, the Mexican road atlas.  If you cannot find it at a local book store , you can order it from Amazon.  See 2nd site for Mexican car permit info and 3rd site for my fav. car ins..you must have it.  See 4th site for reasons you must NOT drive at nite.  Have you considered going to Mazatlan or one of the other beaches on the Pacific side of Mexico? Have you considered a bus...buses are luxurious and cheap and many leave form Mc Allen  daily for Mexico...would be a 2 1/2 to 3 day trip.  You may emal me if i can be of help.
