I'm taking my test shortly in a manual and am going to buy a tiptronic car (I don't like H-sticks) but can I drive it with a manual license?

  1. Of course - tiptronic is really a manual gearbox anyhow. The restriction is on people who take tests in automatics not using manual gearboxes.

  2. Answer : Yes

    Why ?

A Full manual licence entitles you to drive any vehicle of that particular category on your licence. However it does not work the other way round, you are not permitted to control a manual car if your licence says automatic.

Full - Any 'B' Class vehicle, cars and quadbikes.

full (auto) - Automatic 'B' Class vehicles, possibly quads.

Tiptonic is classed as Automatic, I think. This is because there is No clutch in the car.

  3. If you pass your test in a manual you can drive an automatic, but not the other way round.

  4. You can drive any form of Auto with a standard driving licence, but you cannot drive any manual transmission car if youe licence is auto only (ie you took your driving test in an auto car).

  5. Of course you can you muppet. Stop wasting my frickin' time.

  6. Yep, you are o.k. Tiptronic is great, new Mercedes-Benz?

  7. Unless the UK has different drivers licenses depending on the car's transmission(which i doubt but could be wrong) it shouldn't matter.
