I'm thinking of renting a car in Helena MT and driving to Calgary. Cannot afford the flight expense for the family.

  1. yes. call the border patroll tho.

  2. Yes, you can, no problem, as long as you rent from a company that allows that and you let them know you will be taking the car out of the country.

  3. Better check with the Rental Car company...

  4. Sure. I rent cars in upstate New York and drive them into Canada and back all the time.

Be sure to tell the rental car company you're planning to take the car into Canada,  in case they have rules against it (if they do, just try a different rental company).  Remind them to give you a yellow Canadian insurance card which you will need in the unlikely event of an accident.

This assumes you are a US citizen. For tax reasons, Canada does not appreciate Canadians renting cars in the US and driving them back into Canada.

  5. yes you can rent a car and take it across the border as long as you are returning it to the same country
