I heard that as long as you are the requred learners permit age for that state, it is legal to. like, if i am 16 and driving in a state that requires the age to be 15, it is legal. BUT, a lot of people have told me that you can only drive in the state you have a lerners permit for. Who knows the RIGHT answer?

-Thank You!!!!

  1. Wrong............................You can drive from state to state as long as you follow both your state rules as well as the state that you will be driving through.

But you must call the states that you will be driving through first and get their rules.............

  2. Most states only recognize their own permits.

NJ does not recognize out-of-state permits.

The age limit thing you heard about applies to licenses. If a state allows you to drive at 15 you could not drive in other states with higher age limits until you reached the minimum age for those states.

  3. When it comes right down to it, your permit is only good in the state it was issued in.  If you're one state over and live close to the border they probably wouldn't say anything, but if you're three or four states over it might be a problem.

So to be perfectly safe and legal, stay in your own state until you have a license, then there will be no question as all states recognize other states licenses.
