Question:

Can I dye 100% polyester with hair dye?

I keep seeing articles saying that you can't dye polyester without an expensive specialty dye, and even more articles about hair dye staining polyester. Has anyone ever tried to dye 100% polyester fabric with hair dye? I know that seems like a dumb question, but I'd like to dye a polyester shower curtain and I don't want to have to order expensive dye to do it.

  1. I have splattered a polyester shirt with hair dye, and i washed it and it was gone. Sorry to tell you that you are probably going to have to buy the expensive dye, or just purchase new curtains! Best of luck on your project!

  2. I have never used hair dye on any kind of fabric, but I think that you might have to use quite a bit of it.

You might try some RIT fabric dye. You can get it at Wal-Mart, and it is only a couple of dollars. It is usually with all of the detergents, and household cleaning supplies.

You might have to use two or three packages to get the right color, but I have used it on polyester before.
