Can I eat a black eyed pea like a green bean?

Can I pull it off the plant while its green and then steam it and eat like a green bean with salt and pepper, butter? Thx

  1. If you pick before the pod starts to loosen from the seed it is an excellent "green bean".  But cut it off the plant rather than pull it to avoid damage to the plant.  Black eyed peas are also really good shelled green and cooked like a fresh English pea, with a little bacon.  They are beans, one of the many varieties of Southern Cow Peas.


  2. Yes. The immature pods of black-eyed peas can be eaten the same as immature pods of beans. M y father-in-law raised them strickly for the pods for green bean eating for years on end. Incidently, if you have seen those ads for "yard long beans" in plant catalogs, they are just black-eyed peas.Black-eyed peas are just another name for "cowpeas", and are actually a bean.
