Will I be able to educate myself at home just as well as I would be educated in school?

I'm 17 and left school aged 14 but now I want to learn.

I currently ill so I can't go to any college or have a teacher come to my house,so I'll have to read books and do it all by myself and I don't have anyone who can help me like friends or family.

So will I gain just as much knowledge by myself as I would in school?

  1. If you're 17 I would recommend you just go take your GED. Or take free GED prep courses at your local Jr College. Save way more time & money. Plus, unless you're extremely self-motivated, it would be a lot easier & quicker.

I loved homeschooling (I just graduated), but at our age, it's best to just move on & get your GED & go to college.

  2. Yes...I'm 15 and have been doing it all my life as have my brothers and sisters, the oldest two of whom are now at Uni.

Honestly, it depends on you, your personality and the way you learn best: some people might find they do need someone else to teach them or to keep them motivated, enthused, on-track etc; personally, I can only really learn something by 'teaching' it to myself.

If you want to know more, try looking up 'auto-didactic learning'.

  3. I knew this girl who educated herself using the computer. She had a special program and just popped a disc in, read the stuff togo along with the disc and completed a grade.

  4. Absolutely, Go for it! You will remember much more when you educate yourself, than having a teacher lecture to you.

For math, I would try ALEKs math. It's online and will asses you to find out what you know. And then you can work really fast filling in and reviewing concepts. This will get you up to speed quickly! (They have a one-month free trial for homeschoolers.)

And then Read, Read , Read, You can do it!

  5. Reading is very important and understanding what you read is all that you need to educate yourself.    There are many online lectures and lessons that can give you ideas for your studies.

    Here are a few:

    And my personal favorite

All of these are free.   You will have enough here to keep you busy for 3 or 4 years.

Also, if your writing above is any indication, I don't think you need help in grammar but here is a web site just in case:

  6. Of course you can. Check out the book "The Teenage Liberation Handbook"--it's all about taking charge of your education. The world is your oyster and you can learn as much or as little as you wish.

  7. yes. you can do even better at home, now that you are ready to learn and want to learn it will be a little easier. There are so many ways to learn. Now you can get programs on the computer that teach you everything from simple math to calculus or chemistry etc... I would love to help you more. please email me at birdgardengirl@yahoo.com

read John Taylor Gatto books, and also books by Raymond Moore and John Holt. google home school and the websites are never ending. use your library as much as you can. if you are ill you may be able to have the bookmobile deliver books to your home or get a book buddy to do it for you. I am a book buddy now and I get a list of books that my buddy likes and I go the library and get them for her, then I return them too. If you don't have a program like that ask for one. Find a home school group and make friends. age doesn't matter when you home school. you will find some people to be very helpful. don't worry that you have waited so long to get your education. Take the next four years to do high school at home. relax and have fun learning. when you don't get something put it aside and come back to it or find someone that will help you for free. most important don't ever give up. even if it takes you ten years just keep believing in yourself. YOU CAN DO IT  :-)

  8. There is lots of education between the covers of books - and also use the internet and on-line learning.  You may even be able to take on-line courses through your local school board.

    Good Luck!

  9. Educate yourself... yes and no. There is a video called "Homeless to Harvered" you should watch. I would recomend a computer if possible, but I did a lot of schooling myself; my mother was pretty busy rasing four other children and I was the oldest.

The best thing to do is to talk to your parents, then talk to your local school (unless you're dropped out). If you haven't dropped out you'll have to obtain a permit to homeschool.

The answer is yes, but it is very hard. I personally recomend the school NARS, which is an online school where all they do is check the work once a year (unfortunetly it's about $500 a year or so).  If you can't do school every day on a computer this is probbably the best route for you.

Oh: with most schools there are requirements to graduate, but it's best to go through a school to get an "accredited deploma", which is almost the same thing as going through high school.

    Best wishes
