Like a lot of people of her generation my grandmother was never one to trust banks so she always kept her cash in her house. The house did unfortuantely catch fire and some of the bills were burnt...not to where they are unrecognizable but enough so that a business wouldnt accept them. Can we exchange them for spendable money? The serial numbers and all are for the most part still very legiable.

  1. A "bill" is considered a "bill" with anywhere between 51% and 100% of the bill.

  2. The Treasury Department (not your local bank!) will replace damaged currency - but it is a process.  You should go directly to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing page regarding mutilated currency and replacement procedures:

    http://www.bep.treas.gov/section.cfm/8/3...

  3. Contact the U.S. Treasury Department in Washington D.C.

    They can help.

  4. Try to go to the local Bank, they might help you out, cheers.

  5. You should be able to do this locally.  Call your bank and ask them the procedure.

  6. As long as you have 3/4 of the bill you can exchange it for spendable money.  Take it into the bank and have them look at it to make sure that they will give you spendable cash.
