Can I file a claim on the Stimulus Payment at my local tax office?

Well, it's not about my stimulus payment, but my parents'. They got the letter that says they should expect their stimulus payment by June, and they still haven't received anything yet. We are planning to file a claim, but the IRS phone line seems to be always busy, so we are wondering if we can file the claim at our local IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers (TAC). The IRS website just refuses to tell us anything useful...

  1. Why do you keep saying "WE"?  If it is your parents stimulus check, it is not yours and none of your business. Let them take care of it.

  2. You can go to your local office, and they can tell you if it was sent out or if it was taken for some debt they owed.  If it was sent but just got lost in the mail, they can't do anything to replace it for 4-6 weeks after it's sent out.

  3. they will get it when they get it. period. there is no "CLAIM" to be filed.

  4. There is no claim to file other than their tax return.  If they went to their nearest office, someone might be able to track down where their account is in the system.

  5. If your parents filed their tax return, the quickest way to see if anything is going on is to use the applet at irs.gov.  It will show if there is a need to call the IRS.

  6. Yes, you can go to the TAC office, but there are a couple of other options. One is to download Form 3911 from the IRS and mail it in.  The other is to have one of your parents call the IRS next Saturday when phones will be open and the call volume considerably lower. The number is 1-800-829-0582, extension 726. Doing it on the phone is much more efficient than mailing the form in. However, it must be at least 4 weeks since the mailing date. So if the payment was mailed June 20, the time frame will have passed.
