Question:

Can I file a police report for someone tampering with my tail lights? Will it cost me anything?

On the way to work this morning, when I stopped to get gas, I realized both of my tail lights were out. Upon further investigation I realizes one had been unscrewed, and the other was completely missing. My family has been having some problems with some unruly neighbors, and I believe they may have something to do with it. Should I file a police report? Will they dust for fingerprints? (after all, one of the neighbors is a parolee) Will there be any out of pocket expense?

  1. Yes, the police will come out and do this free of charge.  They may even take the report over the phone.  No, they will not send out the CSI and dust for prints unless you know the Mayor or something (sorry Horatio, lol).

You should definitly do this if you have unruly neighbors.  In fact, if they try to do a phone report, try to pursuade them to send a car out... it might scare the neighbors a little.

  2. You should file police reports and make sure you get a police report number and a copy.  The police may not do anything about these incidents, but, if they continue to occur, you have established suspects on which the police can focus.

No - it does not cost anything but your time.
