Question:

Can I file a tax return on behalf of someone else?

I've just set up as a freelance bookkeeper - I've ten years' experience and am working towards Chartered Accountancy. I have also just become an affiliate member of the IAB. Can I file returns for clients, or can I just do all the prep work for the returns and help them to file them?

Also, does anyone know what liability cover I need to arrange?

Thank you SO much!!

  1. Yes.  You can file tax returns as their agent.  You don't have to be qualified.

You need PI insurance to cover the eventuality that a client makes a loss as a result of your error.  See if the IAB has a scheme.

  2. yep they are called accountants

  3. Only executors and people with power of attorney can sign tax retunrs on behalf of other people. You can complete returns, but the client has to sign it and remains ultimately responsible for its content.
