I am wondering if I can file re-entry permit for myself and family or do I HAVE to go through an attorney?

  1. no

  2. Of course you can.

All US immigration forms can, in fact, be filled out and filed by yourself, the individual.

Attorneys can provide guidance or fill out the forms on your behalf to ensure they are filled out correctly and all required documentation attached to the application, but you can do it yourself. In some cases it's strongly recommended to get a lawyer, but a re-entry permit is a simple matter so long as your case is normal/ordinary.

Read the instructions carefully -- see http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/I-131ins... for that -- as well as the form itself: http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/I-131.pd... to view it.

  3. Assuming you and your family are still in the US, you certainly can. If you've already left, you won't be able to.
