Question:

Can I find a job, an apartment, a roommate, and start college in 6 weeks?

I'm applying to a school in Chicago and the classes start on Sep 2. (I haven't been accepted yet...but I'm pretty sure I will be).

I live out of state and need to find a job and an apartment within that time. I don't think I'll be able to afford my own apartment so I'll need to find a roommate too...

What are the chances that I could do all those things within 6 weeks from now?

  1. Start with the job first. You can get a lot of this accomplished at the university commons. They have bulletin boards and posting for campus jobs AND roommates wanted. 6 weeks is a ton of time to pull this off. No worries. Just don't waste time, and don't take the first thing that comes along. You've got enough time to pick-and-choose to some degree. Good luck! Are you U of C? Northwestern?

  2. If you get busy...should be no problem at all.  Take advantage of online resources since you are not in Chicago now.  You have tools such as apartments.com and rent.com.  You can also use sites such as craigslist to post item's you are looking for.  There are sites such as monster and careerbuilders as far as getting a job are concerned.  You may also take advantage of contacts you have in your hometown as to jobs in Chicago.  Many high School guidance counselors can provide some direction for you.

All of the tools you need are available, it's up to you to make it happen!

  3. Talk to the departments of student employment, and of student housing. They may even have something on their website for you to correspond through email. They can help you out. Getting a student position is the best option. Working with the University on work study is a great deal. Otherwise you could take any retail job. They will hire you, many times, within the day. Also, if you can't find housing through the housing department, you can try roommates.com, I suppose. One with your same lifestyle (school etc.) might be a better match though.

  4. it could be done but you would have to be really determined. i would start with a decent paying job first that way you can form a schedule for yourself and then a roomate. apartments are pretty easy to get into, but your going to have to figure up all the deposits and cut on fees and spend as little money as possible until you get it all taking care of. it would be great if you could find a roomate, someone you probably know pretty good to help with some of the cut on fees so you could get in a little sooner.....but i think its going to be a major headache but it can be done

  5. well the hardest things will be finding a place to live and a roommate.  go to the university commons or say the main office and ask where you might find bulletin boards on the campus that would advertise looking for a roommate.  if you cant find one there, leave your own sign asking for a roommate but be sure you say you havent looked for an apartment.  once youve found a place to live, then look for a job somewhere near there.
