Question:

Can I fit a new headset cup and cone to this?

I discovered the reason for the handlebars on one of my bicycles not moving as freely as is normal was down to this unusual headset design. The bottom has a standard cup and cone, but the top just has a small plastic plug that holds it in place. I really would rather have a cup and cone on top too - would it be possible to get a new cup and cone which would fit?

  1. If you want a new headset you *might* also need a new set of forks. Older Raleighs had their own thread sizing - 26 tpi as opposed to the now regular 24tpi (it was cheaper for them to stick to their standard)

  2. I wish I could give you good news but it is unlikely you can retrofit to a standard headset.

The piece of nylon there is to intentionally make it harder to turn... the ungainly length of the headtube and stem made it almost impossible to keep the bike under control while riding. You may, if you wish, take the nylon piece out and see if your local bearing specialist has a UHMW or delrin replacement. Whatever you do, do NOT lubricate it (or any replacements) with anything except pure silicone... oil based lubes will soften it and make it almost non servicable.
