Can I fix these cables on my boat?

I have the forawrd/reverse cable and the throttle cable for the control box and my outboard but they were cut. Can I repair them by sodering them together again or do I have to replace them?

  1. Get new ones, it is almost impossible to fix them.


  2. You have to replace them.  It a Safety issue.

  3. If they are the Morse cable type, a solid wire running through a plastic housing, you need to replace them.  The solid wire is stainless and even a silver solder would be suspect.  And any repair attempt will come apart at just the wrong time.

  4. don't solder them. use cable splices. Go to the hardware store and get the ones that match the size cables you have.,

  5. Most definitely replace them not only is this a safety issue it's a peace of mind and reassurance. Being stranded on the water is not the same as being stranded on the side of the road.

    Those cables are made to keep corrosion and water out, and usually made to a high quality.

    When replacing the cables you'll need the right length. To do this measure from the control box to the stern, then from the gunwale (side of boat) to the centre of motor, then add an extra two feet.

    Why any-one would cut these cables is beyond me.
