Question:

Can I force my father to help pay for college?

My father (separated from my mother-they were never married) refuses to pay a cent for my very expensive (38000 dollars a year) college. However, FAFSA takes his money into account-I am forced to report it even though I don't talk to the man and he won't do anything for the daughter he created. I've explained the situation to my school but they don't care either. Is there anything I can do?

  1. I agree.  Find a cheaper school.  38K is for those who are bad at math and don't realized 38K times 4 = way too much.  Don't expect a dime from him, you'll be happier in the long run and won't be disappointed.  He has no obligation to you financially... just as you have no financial obligations to him.

PS: On the fafsa, if your biological parents are separated/not married you only have to report ONE of them -- not both.  The other parents information that is to be reported would be the step-parent (if you have one).

  2. yeah, go to a cheaper school.

Quote from the movie "good will hunting":

Yeah, go on and keep spending your parents retirement on your ivory league college learning stuff you could learn with a $0.50 library card.

not an exact quote but you get the idea.

I should add my college education was paid by my dad  because when he divorced my mom she had it written in the settlement but I chose a school that was reasonably priced and the tuition was paid by my step moms work because it was in state.

  3. do you own a gun?

  4. Force him to pay, as he is counted. Don't be afraid. If you don't, take a bank loan to pay for your studies.

To be honest, your dad is a scumbag! He should be responsible for your well-being! But look at what happened...

Even you need to pay, go for it if your course helps you! Just go forward and continue your course without any worries. These worries only come tomorrow. We humans live for the moment, don't we?
