Question:

Can I force my finger to fret A position bar chords on guitar ?

I've been having trouble making my bar chords that begin at the open A position. I want to be able to bar the chords using my index finger on strings 1, 5, and 6 and my ring finger, barring strings 2, 3 and 4. The problem is that my fingers don't bend backwards far enough to avoid muting the 1st string.. I can get away with barring with my index finger and fretting strings 2, 3, and 4 with my remaining fingers, but I can't do this past the B chord.

Can I progressively force my ring finger to bend back farther without injuring it?

  1. i suggest barring using your index then use the other 3 for pressing you dont necessarily need to bar it.

  2. It depends on how long you've been playing.  Eventually many musicians move to playing that bar with one finger.  Many can't play it clean.  Some can.   It really depends on you.  However, if you're new to bar chords, I'd suggest learning it with three fingers, and you can work on barring with the ring finger later on, after your fingers are stronger.
