  1. If you can get all of the equipment without going through them you could do it.  Purchase the receiver and dish on Ebay and then install it yourself.  They generally discount the hardware knowing that they will get you to lock in and recoup the money over the course of the contract.  I am a DirecTV customer and didn't want to purchase a HD dvr through them as I would have to extend 2 years.  So I purchased on Ebay activated it and am now still month to month.

  2. You can just get their monthly rate, but  you usually get a better deal if you go with a 12 or 24 month commitment.

  3. The only way to do it is as one person already said: you need to own your equipment. In addition, I recommend getting the Protection Plan because if any of your owned equipment fails it will be replaced with another owned receiver (whereas without the plan it'd be a leased one with a commitment).

In addition, when you purchase equipment from anyone but an authorized dealer you should first ask for the RID and Access Card numbers. Before you make your purchase you're going to want to verify the receiver is owned. Some people will be under the assumption that the receiver is owned even though it's a lease and will sell it because they don't have the service anymore. You can make sure that a receiver is good to go by calling 1 800 531 5000 and having a CSR look up the numbers on the previous accounts.

    Good luck =)
