  1. ATMs are numerous and widespread throughout Rome.

You will pay a fee for the bank whose ATM you are using and will also be charged a fee by your bank.  However, it has been my experience that the net exchange rate has been better than if you had used your card to make a direct purchase.

When you withdraw euros from an ATM in Rome, I recommend you take as much as you can.  The ATM bank fee is usually a flat 5 euros regardless of how much you withdraw.

  2. Yes I did it.  The exchange rate changes daily but you will be paying approximately 40% more money when your bill comes to you in USD.  For example: 1,000.00 USD = 600 EURO.    Have a Great Trip!!

  3. Yes. Most credit cards will charge a hefty margin on top of current exchange rates. Furthermore, they usually use the highest rate of the day.

But if you're talking about a couple of hundred bucks, the difference will be negligible. You'll pay much much more in interest for a cash advance than loosing out on the exchange rate, so I recommend using your credit card as much as possible, rather than making a cash advance on the credit card for Euros in hand.

    Enjoy your vacation :)
