Can I get a British passport if we lost contact with my British father?

I've recently turned 14 and my mom is trying to get me a passport (yes, shocking, but that's not the point). I don't have any British connections other than my father, but we have lost contact with him since I was barely two years old.

We have tried looking for him for ages, but to no avail (so obviously my mom has full custody ever since). Without his signature or anything, can I get a British passport (or at least a temp one...)? I'm really desperate for a British passport right now but we've lost total contact with my British father, so can I still get it?
