I have my bachelors in Business Management. Will I be competitive when applying for a graduate degree in Psychology? I have a 3.8 GPA and haven't taken the GRE but will study like crazy for it. I also have years of volunteer experience in the Psychology field. I'm just concerned that my Bachelor's in Business will limit my chances.

  1. Yes. In many universities you can. You need to check with few and see, some will some may not. I had BA in Hotel Management before getting my MA in Psychology from California Southern University (their program is approved by California Board of Behavioral Sciences to qualify one for Marriage and Family Therapist license).

  2. i'm pretty sure you can, it doesn't really matter what subject your undergrad was in as long as you got good marks

  3. For you to get a masters in psychology , you need to take a few undergraduate courses in psychology to qualify . Your adviser can tell you exactly what you'll need to fill in the gaps .

  4. You will need to contact the Program Directors at the schools you are interested in applying to.  There are certain prerequisite psychology courses that they will require you to have.  Psychology graduate programs are very competitive and they will want to see that you at least have some academic background in psychology in addition to your volunteer experience.  Also, the graduate programs that are highly research oriented unfortunately might not even give any weight to your volunteer experience.

Contact some schools and you will get a better idea of what they are looking for in a candidate.  Good luck!
