Question:

Can I get a background check through the Police/Sheriffs dept on myself?

Hey guys,

I am having a really difficult time finding work in Colorado. The job market is really tough, and my background check is killing me (far as I know). I am wanting to see if I can get my own criminal record through a law enforcement agency, like the Police or Sheriffs dept.

My 2 convictions sound so much worse and more severe than they actually are. I am concerned that employers are more concerned with the name of the convictions than the severity. They are both only Class 3 misdemeanors, which are only one step above "petty offenses", and the lowest form of misdemeanors.

Anyways, if any lawyers or law enforcement ppl can give me an idea about this, it would be great. I am wanting to see in my own eyes what the convictions actually say without giving any online Credit Card information.

Thank you so much, and take care!!

Matt

  1. Hello Matt. What you are asking for is called a BCI check. This will show all activity within the state you are applying in only. Stop in at your local Police or Sheriff's Department and ask to run a BCI. The charge usually runs $18 to $20 without a fingerprint card being submitted ( name/social check only).

If you want a fully comprehensive check, you can stop in at the State Police barracks near you and request an NCIC check ( Federal check). This will show all activity all across the nation since you were born. That will require a fingerprint card (which the police will administer) and costs $69 currently.

I hope this helps and you can find it useful
