Question:

Can I get a follow up appointment for my childbirth with a doctor that did not deliver the baby?

I had no medical insurance so CHIP covered my pregnancy, but not my birth. For my birth I had to go through the emergency room. I was delivered by a doctor that didn't see me during my pregnancy, but I had copies of my medical records. I had an episiotomy and it has now been almost 6 weeks. Emergency medicaid has not kicked in yet so the doctor that delivered the baby will not let me pay cash for my follow up until his bill for the birth is paid (which emergency medicaid is supposed to cover). I can still see the stitches at the top and it still feels like it is healing. Will another doctor check up on my progress even if they did not deliver the baby? I need to get in to see a doctor ASAP any ideas??

  1. If a different dr delivered your baby, and the day they discharged you...didn't the nurse tell you to see your regular ob dr 2 weeks later to get your incision checked? maybe you should schedule an appt witht the dr u were seeing before the one who delivered your baby cause they are the ones who have your pregnancy history.

  2. Call the ER. Ask to speak with the person who does the admissions. Ask if there is a community-based center for someone in your situation. There is one in my community.

  3. Sure - you can go to an OBGYN even though he/she did not deliver the baby. This is a follow up to make sure you are healing and that your uterus is shrinking down normally to regular size. They can also put you on birth control to help you from conceiving  until you are ready for baby #2
