I am 15 and I'm from Texas. I want to be a pediatrcian when I finish school. But my teacher told me that I had to have some experience for people to accept my job applications and stuff. So can I? and do you know any other places places I can get that type of job.

  1. No you can not...lol

  2. Your best bet is to start with volunteer work.  Contact your local hospital and ask what jobs are available for someone your age.  I don't believe they have "candy stripers" any longer, but they might have some type of volunteer position where you work in the peds section of the hospital.  Some have reading rooms and you would help keep them entertained.

  3. At your age getting a job at a hospital is unlikely. However, most hospitals have volunteer programs and High School Volunteers are usually accepted. Contact the hospital you want to look into and see what your options are. There should be a Human Resources department that could answer your questions.

  4. How bout becoming volunteer! This way you can get some kinda of hospital experience and then it will be easier to obtain a job at that hospital!

    good luck!

  5. Call your local children's hospital to see how old you have to be to get a job there. They need people on all shifts to transport patients from their rooms to clinics (for x-rays, other tests, treatments, play) and back - no real skill or experience needed, though some experience with kids will be a plus. They also need messengers to deliver specimens to labs. Unit clerks are needed, too, but they usually look for people who are a bit older - doesn't hurt to ask, though. There may also be positions for activities assistants.

You can always apply. Your application will not be refused unless you're too young.

Experience is not always required for unskilled jobs. Other desirable things hospitals look for in employees are reliability, intelligence (good grades help here), people skills, an upbeat and low-key personality, and interest, caring and enthusiasm.

Don't bother with food service or housekeeping jobs except possibly to get a foot in the door, as these won't give you the experience with patients and the medical environment.

One great way to get experience with kids is to babysit. Check with your high school counseling or vocational office to see if there's a place where parents leave contact info when they're looking for a sitter. It may be on file cards, in a binder or on a web page. If any parents have sick (non-contagious things like kidney problems, epilepsy, cancer) or disabled kids, there's a chance to start working with those kinds of kids. It can be hard for parents of special-needs kids to find good sitters, so you'd be doing some real good here.

Other ways to get job experience are by working at a school, daycare or camp program for special needs kids. Is there a United Cerebral Palsy or developmental school in your area? You can also work with adults, so apply at the regular hospitals as well. Nursing homes often need people.

Hospital labs and pharmacies often have assistant openings. I don't know if they want you to be older or not, though.

Volunteering is good because you have more of a chance to pick the work you want to do, but of course it doesn't pay.
