Can I get a new phone number without buying another phone line?

I just got a new cordless phone that is just for me, so I want a separate phone number from my family's phone number, but I don't want to buy another phone line, so is there any service or company that would allow me to do this?

the phone company used to use a system where your fam had one number and one ring...and the second number had a separate distinct ring

Call your phone company or have your family, and you can have a seperate ring on the same line. We did this when I still lived at home, it is kind of like a double ring.  With a seperate phone #!

and you can have 3 #'s at the most and 3 differnt users can use.

No. You would have to get another phone line put in if you didnt want the same number as your family. 2 different numbers could be on 1 bill.

Yes, it is sometimes called "distinctive ringing" which uses the same wiring but rings two short or one long two short for the other number.

I think you cant. You can get 2 numbers but while one is on the other one must be off. I was a landline consultant, if i am wrong shame on me

Yes. Most companies do this. It's called a separate phone line. You can obtain your own number as well. Just call them up and tell them what you would like. Sorry, didn't read the part about buying, yes you will get charged.
