Can I get a patent on ideas?

I have a really good idea on how to make myself and others additional money. (kind through a new system of banking)....My question is how would I go about getting a patent for it without someone else stealing my idea?

You can either apply for the patent yourself (file the necessary papers with the patent office), or hire a patent attorney to help you.
