Question:

Can I get a rent while working as a temp?

I plan to move to London with a friend and work as a temp, and rent a small flat together. However I've heard that rental/letting agencies will not rent to people who work as temps. Has anyone had this experience, or is it hearsay?

  1. It depends on the landlord. Some people are scared to take on the responsibility of a lease because they never know what their employment status will be from week to week. If you are a temp worker, that means your job could end at any time. I have a friend who was having a hard time finding a place to rent to her because she was a waitress and her money was based on tips. Even though she recieved a low hourly base rate, the apartment agencies deemed it insufficient income because it varies from day to day. I would suggest trying to rent from a private landlord. Also try to find a more permenent job. See how long your assignments will last for. Last thing you want to do is obligate yourself to a lease, and your employment gets terminated weeks after. Not a good situation.

    Good Luck!

  2. housing in london is so in demand and pricey  that i can imagine many agencies having such conditions.
