Question:

Can I get a replacement if I've lost my stimulus package tax rebate check?

I just got my $1200 check a week or 2 ago. It is made out to both me and my husband (his name first since he is the man, of course!) Now I can't find it. It is not endorsed or signed yet. Please tell me there is some way to get a new one if it is actually lost. I don't think anyone else could have gotten hold of it.

  1. The reason your hub's name is first is because YOU let him put his name first on the tax return.  It's not a law or a rule, it's just what most people do....

As for lost, look for the next 4 weeks and if it's still missing, then download form 3911 and send it to the service center.

  2. you can but it will take a while to get the other check

  3. for lost or stolen IRS checks: here is some information from the IRS website: www.irs.gov Frequently asked questions:

you need to know whether a federal tax refund check that was issued to you has been cashed, you can call (800) 829-1954 and request Form 3911 (PDF), Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund.

If you are inquiring about a check that was issued to someone other than yourself, the IRS is not allowed under the Privacy Act of 1974 to disclose any information.

  4. You will need to report it to the IRS 1-800-TAX-1040.

You will have to wait on hold a long time.

It may be faster to diligently search high and low to find the original check.  It could take 8-12 weeks or longer to get a replacement check.

  5. Call 1-800-829-0582, extension 726 and tell the representative that you have lost the check. They will initiate the process of getting a new one, although it could take up to 6 weeks before it arrives.
