Can I get a second job?

I work for Halfords but in my contract it sais I am not allowed second jobs without consent from the company in writing. If i go and do some weekend work and they find out about it - they are allowed to terminate my contract. Has anyone had this problem or come across this and perhaps you could tell me what I can or cant do. If i do get consent, can it be a full time job to fit around my current one or is only part time allowed.

this usually applies to jobs that are in direct competition with the main job -- say i was a cost engineer for  a construction firm -- they would not want me to be the same at one of the other construction firms but would ok it if i want to tend bar!!!

If it's in your contract, then they can terminate you if you get a second job without permission.  The only way to know for sure what they'll allow is if you ask.  Since you're only part-time, there's probably a pretty good chance that they'll say yes.  Good luck!
