Question:

Can I get a speeding ticket without being pulled over?

This morning, I was driving to work, and there was a cop standing on the side of the road, pointing a laser gun thing (?) at all the cars driving by him. The speed limit was 45, and I honestly was going within 3 or 4 MPH of that, but it was 5AM and I was tired, so I really don't remember exactly what speed I was going, but I am sure I wasn't going over the limit (too much) . Do they have to pull you over to give you a ticket? Or can they just mail it without pulling you over (for speeding)? I am in New York. Thanks for any advice!!

  1. when they are doing the radar gun thingy they don't pull you over, if you were speeding you can expect a mail from them in a couple of weeks time

  2. Most likely you wont recieve anything in the mail. What are the odds he recorded your lisence plate number? Slim to none.

    Your in the safe zone.

  3. they can mail it.

  4. Lets be logical about this, shall we ?

If you were not stopped, how can the officer KNOW who was driving the car at the time ? In any driving offence, the driver, NOT the car is the one that has to be identified by Police.

  5. They can mail it.  I wouldn't expect one if you were only going 3-4 mph over.

  6. They CAN give you a ticket without pulling you over, THEY can do whatever they want to.  What you describe sounds like the officer was doing that to make people take notice of their speed and reduce it if they were speeding.
