Question:

Can I get a ticket if I'm blocking part of the crossing lines on a green light?

I was passing through an intersection while the light was still green. I ended up blocking the crossing lines with the back of my car. The cop told me that he gave me the ticket because the light could have gotten red, but it never did. I went back to see if there was a do not block intersection sign, but there wasn't. Can I fight this ticket?

  1. I'm thinking that you were the second vehicle in the intersection, and thus blocking the intersection? You should never block any intersection when the traffic is backed up, and leaving that extra space will also make you safer.

Stay behind the crosswalk, until there is room on the other side of the intersection at any green light.

Ask a lawyer about your situation. He/she will give you the best advice.

  2. This is a tough one because I have done (and continue to do) this myself. .It would seem that you have cause to contest this because you cannot be cited for a condition that did not actually exist. .This is like saying that I could get get a ticket while getting on the freeway because I might go over the speed limit. .If you were in the intersection when the light was red, then you could be flagged for blocking traffic.

By the way, I have written to the CA agency that handles the vehicle code asking for clarification on this issue.

    All the best.

  3. You can't fight this ticket. Blocking a Crosswalk is illegal whether the light is green or not. You would have gotten the same ticket if you had stopped at a red light and the front of your car was blocking the Crosswalk.

  4. You should always stay behind the lines until it is clear and then go make your turn..........

  5. Guess your not in the UK so....don't know :)

  6. The sign does NOT matter you should not block the intersection. That sign is a reminder only.  But it only applies if you BLOCK during the red light.

BUT given the light did NOT turn red - the cop was wrong.  The problem is that cop will probably SAY the light turned red.  And in the case of your word vs. cop, they will always take the cop's word in the court.  If you have to be very clever and show that the cop lied about something else.  And therefor he might have lied about the light.

    Good Luck...
