Question:

Can I get accepted to a MBA program if I do not meet the University's minimum gpa admission requirements?

I did not take my undergraduate degree very seriously and consequently I have a cumulative gpa and upper level gpa that are both 2.8 -2.95. Unfortunately most Universities want a minimum 3.0 GPA. I have experience and I expect to get around a 700 on the GMAT. Do I have a chance to get in? What can I do?

  1. May be this site can help you

  2. You have a chance.  Universities do not necessarily "throw out" applications with less than the GPA they are expecting.  Also, your GPA is close enough to the requirement to merit a second look by admissions staff.

You need to make sure the rest of your application shines.  If possible, in an essay, explain a passion for business and say that you will be very serious about your graduate degree.

Also, try to schedule an interview with admissions.  Showing enthusiasm will help there as well, and admissions officers may be more inclined to admit students in special cases when they can attribute a face to an application.

  3. Borderline situation, you may have a chance with a good GMAT and assuming you have decent work experience.  Don't expect to get into any ranked program though.

  4. The only way to win this one is to speak directly to someone who can influence the decision. Request just 10 minutes of a person's time to visit the relevant department and talk about your application. Do you research before so you can talk about their research or achievements. If you come across as mature and committed you may get a favorable response.

  5. well GPA is really important to universities but maybe if you have other skills such as being officer of an organization..

and also you can talk with professors from the MBA program..

and when you apply tell them about your situation and express your passion about getting a MBA that can help!

by the way.. the minimum is 3.0 GPA but you have to see what is the competitive GPA that is always about 3.5 or above..

  6. Most MBA programs consider three criteria: GPA, GMAT, and work experience. some calculate an index from the three items that they use as a minimum criterion. with a high GMAT and work experience, schools will probably discount a low GPA, especially if you indicate in your application letter than you were not serious in your youth but are capable, which your high gmat should show. Consult the Official MBA Guide to locate MBA programs that suit your situation best. It is a free service with over 2,000 programs worldwide. You can use it to send pre-applications to schools of your choice, and see how they respond.

  7. It depends. For B-School, your resume is often much more important than either your GMAT or your GPA. So in other words, if you were say, starting a company or embarking on a new project while an undergrad (and if not, perhaps theres a way to make it look like it ;) ), then you should not worry.

.5 pts is not a super big deal. Also, sometimes they will cut you a deal and say look, just maintain a 3.0 while your in B-School and that will be fine. Usually they just do that for a semester or so then cut you loose.
