Question:

Can I get an Irish passport?

My mother's father was Irish however not married to my grandmother and died accidentally in Australia soon after my mother was born.

I am thinking about travelling to the UK and Europe next year and am investigating all possible avenues. Do you think it would be possible to get an Irish passport because my grandfather was Irish? If so who should I contact and how do I go about starting the process?

  1. you need to contact the Consular Section of the Department of Foreign Affairs http://www.dfa.ie/home/index.aspx?id=301

If neither of your parents was born in Ireland you can claim Irish Citizenship by descent by obtaining a Certificate of Entry in the Foreign Births Register issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs, you will also need your original birth certificate (the Irish passport office will not accept copies of documents)

as far as i am aware all 2nd and 3rd generation Irish are eligible for an Irish passport which would include you seeing as your grandfather was Irish born.

  2. Yes you can.You are entitled to an Irish passport if either one of your parents or grandparents were born in Ireland.

Your best bet is to contact the nearest Irish consular to you  to get the appropriate forms and information sent to you.

Just be warned though, the less information and documents you have concerning your grandfathers place of birth, the more it will cost for you to get an Irish passport by descent.

    Take care.

  3. no

  4. I believe it is possible, but you will have to prove that your grandfather was Irish, and you will have to prove the the relationship. Contact the Irish Embassy or Consulate in your country to see what the story is. Don't rely on answers from half-informed people here.

  5. It will have to be dealt with as an individual case and success is not guaranteed. You can apply to the Irish Passport Office through your local Irish Embassy. Make sure to include copies of documents to support your case (birth certificates etc). Good luck!

  6. If u can prove ur grandfather was irish then u can..
