Can I get cash instead of repairs for my car insurance claim?

The damage to the car is from hail and I have already received an appraisal but I would like to know if I can get a check from my insurance company instead of getting the repairs done. Basically, do I have to spend the money on repairs or can I keep it?

  1. Yes, you can get the money instead of having the repair done. I have done this 2 different times. The insurance company is required to reimburse you for the damage to your car and there is no requirement that you get it fixed. Each time they pointed out to me that they would not be responsible for paying for any damages to the part of the car that was damaged that they were reimbursing me for.

  3. yes you can keep the money but don't be expecting to ever be paid for hail damage to your car again.  they will not keep paying on an already damaged car.  if you have a leinholder on the car THEY will require you fix it as they have an insurable interest in the car.

  4. as long as you don't have a loan on the car, you can cash the check and walk away - however, the insurance company doesn't have to give you comprehensive coverage any more, if you don't get the damage fixed - ie, they can cancel the collision & comp section of your policy.

You'll want to research this some more....
