Question:

Can I get cash instead of the repair for the damage to my car?

Hi

I had a minor accident - someone ran into the back of my car. Their insurer immediately accepted fault and is offering to get my car repaired.

The damage to the car is hardly visible, but the quote I have says it'll cost over 1000 pounds to repair. The car isn't worth much, so I am thinking of simply taking the cash (if I can), and part-exchanging my car for something better.

My questions are:

1. Am I allowed to ask for a cash alternative? Or is there some negitation involved with the insurer of the other car?

2. If I can get a cash alternative, will I be able to use the quote I have? Or do I have to get another quote for the other insurer's authorised repairers.

My insurance company isn't involved, and I believe I can keep it that way.

Thanks for your help.

  1. Great design, resourceful information,user-friendly layout should be a good place to answer your questions.http://car-insurance.online-helpers.info...

  2. Sounds as if you are in the UK.  In the USA, if this happened, you would be able to get a check from the others insurance and do with it what you want.  Keep in mind that if you don't have it fixed, your own insurance company won't pay  to have the same damage fixed again, should you get into another accident.

  3. Yes you can, it's called a 'cash out'.  It's legal as long as the vehicle is not considered a total loss.

  4. If you are dealing directly with the other party you could sort out the accident on a cash basis, but if I was the third party I would insist on receipts to prove payment for future ref. If the claim is going through the other party's insurance no cash offer will be made.

  5. The third party insurer, will pay you directly.  They will likely use their appraisal.  They do not care if you do not get your vehicle repaired.  They are reimbursing you for the damage their insured was legally liable for.   Not repairing the vehicle simply reduces the value of your vehicle.

  6. Yes you can get cash, you will need 2 estimates from diffrent garages. Why not go use one of the many accident claims services, I am sure they will sort it out. Why worry about your insurance company, you have done no wrong.

  7. You should be able to get the money. They send you a check for the damages if it is infact not your fault. What you do with that money is up to you.

I got a check for 1500 when I got in my wreck, but I got mine fixed.

    good luck
