Question:

Can I get extended time in University?

I have High Functioning Autism, and I need extended time - otherwise I fail tests and exams because I'm focusing on how many minutes I have left instead of the exam itself. I want to know whether I can get extended time in University, otherwise I'll (unhappily) go to collage. I always have a 85-90% average, so I think I should go to University, but not if I can't get the help I need.

  1. it depends on each school.  The school that you are interested in, you should contact the admissions office to determine how they deal w/ special needs.  if there is a documented mental/health issue then school may accommodate you.  Just be prepared to back up w/ documentation, what you are asking for.

  2. If you are in HS, work with your counselor or transition coordinator to visit the college you plan on going to and talk with them about your situation.  Since you have Autism, it will be absolutely imperative that you have your most recent IEP state what your modifications are.  It will also be very important to have a medical diagnosis attached to your re-evaluation or at least mentioned (ie - Autsim Spectrum Disorder).  Once you have your modifications documented, it will be much easier to get the help you need when you talk to a college counselor or counseling program.  In many instances, colleges will allow extended time and an alternative setting.  Any types of modifications that cost money will usually not be covered by the University (ie-scribes for assignments, assistive technology, etc...).  Hope this helps.

Good luck and good for you.
