Question:

Can I get in trouble if my room mate keeps beer in our dorm room?

My room mate is over 21, so he buys alcohol and keeps it in the fridge in our dorm room. Nobody on the floor (like our mentor) minds, but I was just wondering if there's anything illegal about him keeping it in the room? I personally don't drink, and I really don't care that he keeps it in the fridge, but at the same time I don't want us to risk getting in trouble with the law.

  1. It depends.  Your university may have policies that forbid students from having alcohol in their dorms.  If it is student housing on campus, the university may be able to dictate this.

If you're under 21, then this becomes difficult as he could easily be accused of providing alcohol to someone underage.

Check with your university's rules and regulations regarding student housing.  Because the university owns the land (and the dorms), they can, typically, dictate policy on this matter.

  2. If you picked one of the dry dorm rooms, then you are not allowed to have anything in there. However, if you have a normal dorm room, you can't get in trouble.

  3. No, because it's his beer and he's legal to possess it. Do you get in trouble when your parents have beer in the house? No, because it's theirs. You will only get into trouble if you are found to be drinking it.

  4. never risk getting caught. Ain't worth it.

  5. If no one tell, you are safe. But then again, he is legal to drink and your room is your privacy.

  6. I would not worry about it as long as you are not drinking it.  You won't be the one that gets in trouble anyways, your roomate will. :(  If no one on the floor cares it shouldn't be an issue, but at the same time, I wouldn't tell anyone about it.  A dorm that I stayed in had a policy against it.  No one really stuck to it and no one really talked about it or seemed to care.  Keep it on the low low and everything should be fine.

  7. To find out about any law in you state (and tons of other stuff) go to www.(your states name here).gov

You will not get in trouble with the law for looking it up.

Your college may also have a policy about alcohol in rooms of under age students, even if no one seems to care this is important cause you could both get disciplinary action or kicked out of school if there is a prohibitive policy.

  8. Hi, well since your roommate is 21 and legal to drink then that would be fined, but if your not 21 or over then there can be a problem

  9. If he's over 21, and it's no violation of school policy, and your mentor doesn't mind, and your parents don't mind, then it's fine.

I mean, you have more than the police to worry about.

If it worries you, let it be known, and arrange for another roommate.

  10. 21 is the legal drinking age. However, college authority have the right to search your dorm if they believe you have something to hide, ie drugs. As long as you are not hosting party's, or giving them out to underage students, it should be okay.

  11. as long as you dont drink any it should be fine.  I keep beer in the house and i have a 13 year old and a 11 year old.  they dont drink it and i dont get into troyble, that being said if your dorm has a policy against it. yeah, sure you can get into trouble.
