Question:

Can I get into a career in game development with a degree in Multimedia Programming?

Also, would I need a Bachelor's Degree or a Master's? I never really considered going into the game development industry till recently. I'm asking this question because I know there are degrees specifically for game development, but Multimedia Programming involves programming of all sorts. I also get to learn how to use a wide variety of programs (some which are used to develop games). The reason I don't want to get a degree ONLY for game development is because I lose interest in things pretty quick so I may decide to pursue a different career......

Thanks in advance guys!

  1. Sure you can. First of all, there aren't that many degree programs just for game development.

You only need a bachelor's degree. Even if you eventually want a master's, you're better off getting the bachelor's and at least 2-3 years of work experience before bothering with a master's. For programming, employers want to know you've done it on the job.

If your school offers courses in game development and game theory, take them. Even if you later move on to something else, other types of software are increasingly using game skills. For example, educational and medical simulations use them, and even some business and advertising software use certain aspects.

Even if your school has no game-oriented courses, you can work games or game elements into your projects for other courses and show these to prospective employers.

Also, you can get an internship at a game company during college.
