Can I get into college with a low gpa?

I have a really low gpa, a 1.8. I'm a senior this year and I know I can make straight A's in all eight of my classes but will this bring me up to anything college-worthy? Will my SAT scores help in my college application?

  1. Your best bet is to go to a community college and then transfer. Even if you got a 4.0 your senior year it wouldn't be enough for the majority of colleges to accept you.

  2. You apply to colleges before you get any of your senior grades back, so no, any college that accepted you with that GPA would be out to get as much money out of you as possible before you failed out.  If you really want to go to college (and think very hard about why you want to go if you've been struggling so much in high school), start at a community college, do well there, and transfer after two years.  In two years of good grades at community college, you'll be able to get into a much better school that wouldn't even consider you now.

  3. SAT scores will help, but generally, most state schools have requirements such as "the top half of graduating classes are accepted," or other similar statements.  If you do really well on your SAT's you may still get in, or get admitted on a probationary status.

My question for you is: How sure are you that you can make straight A's if now you only have a 1.8?  Colleges admit people who they believe will succeed and GPA is the arguably the best measure of that.  College is really difficult, especially if you want to move away.  I had a 3.8 in high school and graduated my undergrad with a 2.75.  There are alot of distractions and you have to be really motivated.  If you ARE really motivated, my best suggestion would be to go to a local community college and if you succeed there, you should be able to transfer almost anywhere you want to go.

  4. just go to community college. it's actually recommended since it shows how you will do in a university course. then transfer to a university after 2 years. redeem yourself in community college. trust me, it really helps out since it properly prepares you.
