  1. With all due respect Brenda A, I think you are a little mixed up as to what you will get with a Digital Converter Box.  The channels you mentioned in your question are not the ones you will get with the DTV box.  The DTV box will convert your Analog channels from Ch. 2-13 VHF and 14-69 UHF via an antenna as your input signal.  The direct answer to your question is YES, you will get more channels, but not the ones you are referring to.  Some channels will have sub-channels, like 58-1, 58-2, 58-3, etc.  The DTV box works with your UHF antenna to receive these channels.  If you have the Dish Network, you will not need a DTV box.

  2. The DTV converter box is only for receiving broadcast (over-the-air) digital TV channels and displaying them on an analog TV (standard old-style TV). These are the channels that you get using an antenna, not cable or satellite. So you won't get any of the channels that you mentioned.

Broadcast channels are NBC, CBS, ABC, CW (formally UPN/WB), Fox, ion (formerly PAX) and PBS. There may be others in some areas.

Some digital channels have sub-channels, like 40-1, 40-2, etc, up to 5 or 6. These currently mostly carry things like weather, news, and children's programming, but will probably be used for other things later. The 40-1 is usually the main HD feed, and the others are SD (standard definition).

  3. You will get more stations, but unfortunately, you won't get any of the ones you listed.

Sci-Fi, Discovery and the others are not free broadcast stations, so you need a pay service (cable or satellite) to get them.  Hope this helps!

  4. You will get more programming options.  Technically, you do not get more channels.  They are just sub channels.  To us, they are basically more channels.  What I mean is you get channels like 4-1, 4-2 and so on.

If you get more programs to watch depends on where you life.  Digital will not accept a snowy picture, so if you are out in the woods, chances are that half ***ed picture will not come in.  That is the thing that is driving me crazy with this digital thing.  For the people who live in the urban and suburban areas, it works great.  For people out in towns with populations under 500, it will be hectic trying to mount an antenna on a roof.

Channels you have to pay for during the analog days are channels you still have to pay for now.  You will get added channels under a single channel, again for example 4-1, 4-2, but they will not be something like the Discovery Channel or ESPN.
