I have M.S. I am on short-term disability becasue of it and I am about to apply for SSDI. I am trying to put together a game plan. My first concern is health benefits. I am told by many that I should get on Medicare.

Can I get on Medicare at my age?? I know next to nothing about this. Thank you so much, everyone.

  1. yes you can i am sure you call them and ask them what you need to fill out or send package to fill out. take care.

  2. yeah

  3. Once social security approves your disability, you will be granted medicare. Ask your ssdi case worker, they can help explain. You can also visit www.ssa.gov and select the disability link fo rmore info about ssd & medicare. or www.medicare.gov

  4. Only if you're on SSDI, or in end stage renal failure.

  5. Call your local SS office and make an appt to go in and talk to them.. They should have given you that information regarding your medical benefits and qualifications and the term of availability of the benefits when they were awarded for your part-time disability.  If not, call them and ask them.  They can answer your questions, and if you aren't eligible for medicare, you may be eligible for medicaid through your local Dept of Human Services.. Give them a call as well, and fill out an application for benefits through them.. They may only be paid for the disability term but it will help with health care service costs for now and you may qualify for food stamps and other state programs that are available.  Good luck and I hope you get better soon.

  6. Yes, Medicare covers people under 65 but you have to be on SSDI for 24 months.

In the meantime you should check with your state Medicaid office. You have to qualify by income but many states allow you to qualify with a higher income if you are classified as "medically needy".
