Can I get surround sound using my HDTV ??

I have a Samsung HT-TX75 surround sound. It has an HDMI input, and and HDMI output. 3 Component outs, and finally 2 Red/White Audio IN'S

My Toshiba 46" Regza is brand new and should have all necessary hookups.

I was thinking that I could just go TV Red/White Composite OUT------> into the Red/White Audio IN on the Receiver............But then wouldn't the TV have to be set on Video 1 to get sound ?.....and therefore no picture. There is no yellow video in on the receiver.

And no, im not using a cable box

Any other options ?

  1. You can connect your Toshiba TV fixed audio out to your audio line in of your Samsung and select that aux in from your surround sound and select the Dolby pro logic surround mode (analog surround processing). Another option is to run an optical digital cable out from the back of your Toshiba TV (Toslink) to the Optical in(Toslink) input on your Samsung and you will have Digital Dolby Processing (Assuming that your TV has digital 5.1 channels coming in from your cable company).

The easiest is the analog Dolby processing that I explained in the top of my post.

  2. If you reciver is a prologic reciever you just need to run your audio outs to your input connections. You won't need to switch to video 1 unless your using a preriphial such as an external dvd player.

  3. Dolby Pro Logic (specifically Dolby Pro Logic II, implemented in 2000, your specific home theater system DOES have this) like these people explained will do the trick. If you connect your TV to your receiver using the white and blue RCA cables, that's only a stereo signal; the receiver, when in Dolby Pro Logic mode, will "decode" (read: transform) that to a 5.1 surround sound signal. That's what I use and it sounds great to me, I even play my mp3s using that system and Pink Floyd circles around me at times. It's quite neat!
