Can I get tenure back?

Question

In April 2006 I was injured by a student and In June 2007 I was approved for disability retirement. I never thought I would be well enough to return to work. Through therapy, doctors, etc. I am now well enough to return to work. The system is saying I lost my tenure and have to submit application as new hire, however they will count my years experience. The school system just laid off over 400 employees. I am having problems getting a job, with no tenure. Is there a way for me to get my tenure back in my system?

I didn't know some states still allowed teachers to get tenure.  Mississippi hasn't done that in years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
