  1. Take Amtrak train from Detroit to Chicago.

Take Amtrak train from Chicago to DC

Take Amtrak train from DC to Spartanburg, SC.

Take Greyhound bus from Spartanburg to Asheville.

The trip will probably take you 2-3 business days because you're catching 2 trains which operate only once a day.  You can probably fly there in an hour or two for far less than what Amtrak would charge you.  Greyhound would work as well.

{EDIT} You could ride a bike down US 23 and average 10-12 MPH and arrive at Asheville faster than the train - just bring along camping gear, some money and some food.

  2. Closest place is Spartanburg SC

  3. Well, Amtrak does not currently have a station directly in Asheville but if you check their website and check their station listings you can get the closest one nearby.

  4. Yeah I'd suggest you take Greyhound or fly as the train isn't very direct and would take a very long time! Greyhound takes like 14 hours and if booked in advance can be as little as $45.

  5. No you cant the closest way via the rail is the Toledo terminal there you can get on a Amtrak train and head for Washington then over to north Carolina
