  1. tricanese is right: take the train from Florence to Milan, and then change to get to either Como or Varenna, depending on your ultimate destination. I went to Menaggio, which is about halfway up the lake on the west coast. I went to the Como train station, but then there was a 40 minute bus ride to Menaggio. Varenna is just a short ferry ride across the lake.

See http://www.trenitalia.it/en/index.html for train schedules, and http://www.navigazionelaghi.it/italia/na... for ferry information.

    Buon viaggio!

  2. it depends on where you want to go on lake como.

from Milan to Como you have to use "ferrovie nord milano" from Cadorna station, if you go to Lecco and Varenna and other destinations, it's ok "trenitalia", you better contact me for details, i live there.

  3. When I went to Como from Firenze I went to Milano then to Como, its not bad.  You can get to Varenna on the north side of Lago di Como from places east of there like Verona and Venice, but from Florence its easier to go thru Milano.

  4. Try this official site for Italian trains. It is in English.
