Question:

Can I give a cat Sudafed or Neo-Synephrine drops in nostrils? She is not responding to any other URI treatment

She has been to two vets and been sick since April. She has had two steroid shots in two months. She sits in a bathroom with a Vicks steam vaporizer for part of each day. She is getting steroid nasal drops. She takes Clavamox pills. She takes 500mg l-lysine tablets twice a day. Help! My vets say they "don't know" if Sudafed tablets or Neo-Synephrine drops are OK in cats, but some Web sites say they are. I also want vet to prescribe Famvir antiviral tablets but so far he's "checking on it."

  1. No never give animals humam drugs because it could quickly be leading to the animal having an acciedental overdose.

  2. Don't give her any medicine without vet supervision. You'll probably just make the situation worse. One of my cats had a nasty respiratory infection the Clavamox did nothing for. My vet switched him to Clindacure (clyindamyacin) and it wiped it right out. See if your vet would recommend it for your cat. You want to treat the infection, not the symptoms to get rid of it. Up your cat's fluid intake too. Wet food is the best way to do that.  Fancy Feast is not a good brand.  Try Wellness.  If it goes on much longer I would get a second opinion from another vet.

  3. Next step would be to have the vet culture the secretions in her nose to find out just what you are dealing with.  Not all bacteria respond to Clavamox.  When we get a very ill cat in rescue, and Clavamox doesn't work, we go with Baytril, and then sometimes Zythromax.  But you will actually save time with a culture, there may be an unexpected bacteria in there.  Treating with the correct antibiotic may just do the trick for her.

  4. What sort of breed is your cat? I wouldn't recommend giving your cat any human tablets, you can over dose them too easily. i would say take your cat to another vet and get a second opinion from them.

  5. NO NO NO.........Call the vet!

  6. I would suggest you find another vet. Have they done any type of xrays to make sure there is not a reason why the Antibiotics are not working? Animals can take Sudafed, I am not sure about the Neo Synephrine drops. I do not see why it would be a problem though. Good Luck.
