Question:

Can I give my kitten adult food? Switching to wellness...

Thanks to the answers in my previous question about cat food, I think I'm switching to Wellness. My female is a little over a year... Jack is about 5 months old. I don't let them eat out of the same bowl, but they sometimes don't eat all their food and then the other cat eats a little from the other bowl...other than that, they are good about eating from their own bowl. Is it going to be bad for the kitten if he eats a little from the adult, and vice versa for the adult. A previous answer stated their isn't much difference between adult and kitten food.

  1. Hi Jules!

Good for you for switching to such an excellent food for your kitties.

I have an adult Oriental Shorthair that cannot eat any other food but moist Wellness Kitten food. While he loves other varieties of Wellness, somehow or other they don't agree with him, and he generally vomits shortly after eating it. He has not problems with the kitten food at all. I checked with my vet about this. She told me that as long as he has no adverse reactions to the kitten food, and since he is not overweight there are no problems using the food at all.

Of course, I would check with your vet as all cats are different, but if your cat is only getting a l**k or two of the kitten food, there should be no problem at all. There is a difference in the protein and fat content between the two but not really that significant.

Again, congratulations on making an excellent choice of food for your kitties.  Great product!

  2. I posted this answer to your first question,,, so I'm re posting here:

Friskies is junk food to a cat, so is meow mix, most Fancy Feast flavors and the overwhelming majority of cat foods sold in the grocery store. If cost is a factor, keep in mind that a cat will eat much more of these junk foods in volume than if you spent the money to buy premium foods from a pet food distributor.

Check the ingredients on cat foods. Ideally if the first 4-5 ingredients listed are meat, it's great quality and great for you cat.

I've been researching this lately, and found some great information:

  3. i just gave away a litter of kittens. kitten food has extra vitamin and such which is ideal for them. but in my situation i had 7 kittens and 3 adults to feed. the kittens would watch the adults and want to eat there food. so i couldnt get them to eat there own food. so alot of people were surprised when i gave them away that they only ate dry adult cat food. the mother ate the kitten food but it is ok. helps there body with the extra vitamins when there nursing. but it can give them the runs lol. go ahead and feed them both the same food. one other thing dont assume that if its more expensive that its better. i tested that one too. when my female was pregnant i bought a huge 25 dollar bag of iams cat food. my cats wouldnt eat it. i went a week with them crying and begging for food. i went and got there cheaper meow mix i had always fed them and they were set. and it saved me like 10 dollars a bag so i couldnt argue. i had to give away the iams cause they wouldnt touch it.

  4. The kitten food has the nutirents and other stuff that kittens inparticular need for their nutriton. The adult cat food doesnt have the nutrients that kitten food has that kittens need to grow and be healthy adult cats.

You could try mixing some kitten food with some adult food and see if he takes that but defitnally dont switch the 5 month old all at once. I would talk to your vet and see if it is safe for him to eat adult catfood but we didnt switch our kittens until they were about 10-11 months.

  5. Kitten food will be fine for a cat, just not all the time. If your cat doesn't like her own food, maybe you should try a different brand. But your kitten is a different story. Remember, kitten food has the nutrients that a kitten needs, so make sure your kitten eats that until he is a year old. He can snack on cat food a little bit, but make sure he mainly eats his kitten food.

  6. Wellness is fine for all age groups, as it is a very high quality cat food. My kitten loved the wet food, but refused to eat the dry (will only cat Life's Abundance dry right now). The breeder even fed the kittens high quality "adult" cat food (Life's Abundance and Royal Kaan).  Because the main ingredient in Wellness is a meat product, your kitten should be fine and healthy eating it.

  7. Kitten food has a lot more fat/nutrition per kibble in comparison to adult cat food. If they are only eating a few kibbles out of each others' bowls then I wouldn't worry too much about it, but if they are eating a fair portion then I would try to stop it because your adult cat may get fat and your kitten will not be getting enough nutrients.

Feeding them Wellness is a very good decision (good for you, not many people care about what's in their pet's food!!) I feed my kitten Wellness and he has the softest fur and is very healthy (eyes are nice and clear, long whiskers, nice coat etc) and as a plus it makes their bowel movements smaller because their is no corn or grain!
