Even though the basic requirements are the same, would I need to more book work or more physical work?

  1. It would take a little more: medical school and an ophthalmology residency.

  2. Optometry school is completely separate from medical school, although you would be qualified to perform many of the same services.  Depending on the state in which you practice, you may be licensed to perform some surgeries, but not the entire ophthalmologic spectrum.

Optometry requires a 4-yr college degree followed by 4 yrs of graduate school.  You become a professional eye specialist, but not a medical doctor.

Ophthalmology requires a 4-yr college degree followed by 4 yrs of medical school, followed by 3 yrs of ophthalmology residency.  Naturally, this gives you a medical degree.

  3. Sure- after you earn your MD. And be at the top of your class while you are at it.
