Can I go to the apple store to buy a new iphone?

I lost my iphone. the 3G one. I was wondering if I already have a contract with them, can I just go to the app store to buy a new one or do I have to sign a new contract?

How does this work? The reason is because I have a gift card to the apple store so I wanted to get a new one.

Well when you signed a contract for two years, basically saying you can't get a new phone or cancel your service for the next two years without penalties. You can go to the Apple Store and purchase the iPhone, but it will be at the higher pricing at $399 for the 8 GB and $499 for the 16 GB. But, you also have to sign another new contract, for another two years from the date of purchase. Eventually, AT&T is supposed to come out with a no commitment one, which means you won't have to sign a contract, but it would be $599 and $699.
