Can I grow my fern inside under a solar lamp or does it HAVE to be near a window?

  2. Wow, quite the range of answers here....

    My experience is that ferns tend to thrive indoors with nothing more than ambient light.  In fact, the ones I've placed near windows don't fare so well.  I've found that misting them daily helps.  I also like to use a food called Oxygen Plus about once a month.  Otherwise, I water twice a week.  If you're a smoker, don't bother trying to grow a fern indoors...  they really don't like cigarette smoke.  Oh, and cats seem to like chewing on ferns.

    I'm pretty sure a solar lamp would cause a fern to yellow and wither...
